First off all, I think you should know that I’ve spent the last six months trying to find the perfect laptop. Well, my old Asus laptop has decided to pass away and destroy the harddisk inside – and it completely died. Even the customer service said that it is better for me to find a replacement rather than trying to fix it.
So, three months ago I found my perfect laptop: Asus Zenbook Flip 14 UX461UN. You think it’d be easy to find a product that suits our requirements. But for me, the laptop had to have:
1. SSD capacity (seriously, if you want to find a new laptop, opt for SSD. No more hard-disk because the technology kept decreasing).
2. Less than 2 kg weight (because I bring my laptop almost everywhere I go and it gets very tiring when you bring more than 2kg-laptop).
3. Convertible form (it should be able to be flipped around, to watch Netflix, to type, to present the ppt file, etc).
4. At least core i7 (that’s like, the basic requirement to run Photoshop without lagging here and there).
5. Long-lasting battery (at least it could operate by 7 hours without draining the juice).
More importantly, how to wrap all those requirements and buy something that you can afford.
First time I bought the laptop, I immediately found overheat issue. One day after I brought it from the store, the laptop reached 70+ Celcius degree, it’s burning my hand. I knew something was not right. Later that day, the laptop just went off and couldn’t be turned on anymore.
So, I got a new unit of Zenbook Flip 14 UX461UN as a replacement. Yes, thank God they had 7-days new unit warranty. Otherwise I would be stuck with the burning laptop for the rest of my life. And I got to say, the new product is SO COOL!
I name the laptop: Jamie Lannister. Yep, the Kingslayer from Game of Thrones. I don’t know, I just feel like it fits perfectly. The laptop is light, slim, and only weighs around 1.5 kg. It’s a relief because I can pack it in my rucksack without ended up complaining about back ache the next day. As you can see, the design has luxurious touch on it without being too tacky.
The Hardware
The keyboard is responsive. I like it better than HP’s keyboard because it does not make any clicky sound. It’s much more suitable to use in a quiet library without annoying other people. As for the screen, admittedly the touch-screen technology makes the screen more prone to finger prints, but with the right level of brightness, it wouldn’t be a problem.
Zenbook Flip 14 UX461UN have four modes: tent, laptop, tablet, and standing. The hinge is strong and stable. But I found it difficult to hold the tablet with only one hand. Maybe because of the large size (13.3″), but it doesn’t matter to me because I imagine I would use the tablet mode only on the trains or planes.
Speakers are sufficient. Even though they are located in the back, the voice is clear and loud. I normally watch Netflix in laptop mode with only 50-level volume, it’s already loud enough. SSD memory is the thing that makes me glad I don’t settle for another hard-disk technology. I’m done using hard-disk when I found out my hard-disk had bad sector out of a sudden (they just said: It’s time..). Just last night, I moved 110 Gigabyte data from my old laptop and Jaime only needs less than 20 minutes. Freaking fast!
The Battery
One thing that could be a deal-breaker for me is battery life. No matter how awesome your laptop is, if it does not hold up for more than 7 hours, I find it useless. I don’t want to spend so many time being plugged in, might as well choose PC instead.
That being said, I’m proud to say that Zenbook Flip 14 UX461UN has healthy battery life. Fully charged, it could operate with normal activity for around 9-10 hours. There was one time when the battery reaches 25% and I turned out the battery saver, it could last for about one hour and a half before demanding a charger.
What’s more, Zenbook Flip 14 also has fast-charging technology. This is SUPER helpful. This is something that I didn’t expect, but once you had it, you could never settle to regular charging time anymore. From 10%, it could reach 60% in only half an hour. Make that 1.5 hour, it would be completely ready to take off again. Awesome, right?
The Price
Most people would say that Zenbook Flip 14 UX461UN is quite expensive. But the thing is, I use my laptop every single day – almost in all my wake hours. I use it for browsing, for freelance-writing, and watching Netflix. It’s an investment, really. Unlike clothes, the price of a gadget could really give a significant difference to your life. There’s a huge difference between 5-million laptop and 10-million laptop, for example.
So, if you ever want to upgrade your laptop with 2-in-1 laptop with the best technology but won’t rob you broke, you could choose Asus Zenbook Flip 14 UX461UN. This isn’t an endorsement. This is just me loving my new laptop and wishing that you’d someday find your perfect laptop, too! But if your requirements are more or less the same as mine, then you’d be more than happy to get Asus Zenbook Flip 14.
Hey Jaime Lannister, let’s make a lot of money and go to many adventures together, yea?
